We are told that being “fat” is not desirable for many health conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, among others. However, new studies are showing there are benefits to having “fat” in the body. “White” fat is more commonly linked to the conditions listed above in overweight or obese patients. Mostly associated with newborns and animals, many do not know that some adults also have “brown” fat, which is typically located in the deeper areas of the neck, shoulders, and calves. Brown fat has been researched for decades, but recently studied in over 52,000 patients and published by Nature Medicine. According to the study, several common and chronic diseases were less prevalent among patient with detectable brown fat including type 2 diabetes, and abnormal cholesterol compared to patients without detectable brown fat.
